El Salvador has been affected by Storm Amanda bringing torrential rains causing flooding and landslides. Officials say at least 14 people have been killed and the president has declared a 15-day state of emergency to deal with the effects of the storm (on top of the Covid 19 pandemic).
The torrential rains affected most of the south part of the capital city. There have been some mudslides in San Carlos community but the community house is safe and is being used by some families for shelter.
SALCET workers are safe and sponsor projects are working with affected communities to provide food and provisions.
In relation to Covid 19, the death toll has been low (53 deaths) and it is understood that lock down measures will ease on 15 June.
SALCET is pleased to hear that the Community House in San Carlos has been put to good use during this emergency, as we were very sad to find it unused and in disrepair when we visited in April 2019. We hope that this will be the start of getting it back to full function for the local community.
